We expect to have the change completed for all affected users before the start of fall semester. We then will begin contacting other faculty, staff, and students who are using an outdated client to help them make the transition. We will roll this change out gradually, starting with accounts that are attractive targets for cyber attackers: academic and administrative leadership, and individuals who have opted into using multi-factor authentication with all eligible services. This is a good thing, because it will make it harder for hackers and scammers to access an account with a stolen password. With cyber attacks becoming not only more common but also more sophisticated, Microsoft has decided to phase out Basic Authentication. Many of these older applications use Basic Authentication, a login method that does not support multi-factor authentication. These include the built-in Mail and Calendar apps that come with MacOS, iOS, and Android, as well as older desktop applications like Eudora, Pine, and Thunderbird. The best are Outlook, Outlook Mobile, and Outlook on the Web, but other clients and apps also can be made to work. Historically, Microsoft has supported many ways of accessing email and calendar. When this change takes effect, some email and calendar clients and mobile apps will stop working with Office 365. To find out if this change will affect you and what you will need to do, see Next Steps below. On May 11, 2020, OIT will begin phasing out support for Basic Authentication, an older, less secure way of accessing Office 365 services.
